Group 5 Treatment Presentation

10 Conventions Of A Thriller

Genre Research Update

The film genre me and my group have chosen is psychological thriller. The reasons why we chose to do psychological thrillers is because most of the scenes are filmed during the night what suits the season we are in now because it gets late earlier. Another reason why we chose then genre is because it is a more exciting genre and it will keep all the group interested and we wont get bored of it. Then another reason why is from where it create a lot of tension in the opening sequence and will keep more engaged, and it will also show the skill that we as a group have, with fast pace editing, the right lighting and the right actors.

The conventions that i have identified are that there is a battle of justice vs injustice, there is a price to be paid for the conclusion of the story, a growing sense of threat or danger, there is normally two main characters, the characters appear smartly dressed, it is essential in building up suspense, it is set in an Urban setting, there is dim lighting, it has point of view and close up shots and it is Fast pace editing. We will uses them in our opening scene with our characters dresses smartly in an urban place. But may adapt the shot types with establishing shots and midshots, and change the type of battle it is.

Key text genres influenced our initial idea by showing a the main character in a bad situation, this will make the audience wonder what happened and keep them on edge because they wont be sure what happens to the character at the end and do not no who the person is that has put the main character in that bad situation where it is either life or death.

We will use themes of mystery, death and drama with dark lighting to create tension and keep the audience on edge. Then by showing the last sequence of the narrative towards the beginning but only giving away who one of the characters are it keep the mystery and drama in the opening sequence. Also by showing that murder has also took place it shows how death might be consistent throughout the narrative.

My genre research have helped develop our treatment in a way that both of the victims should also work closely with killer and have gone against his word, therefore the killer has a valid reason for killing them. This will make the narrative make more sense from where the killer has a motive and tries to kill people who finds out about what he as done, considering the killer is supposed to be a good guy from where he works in the police force as a detective.

Narrative Idea's

First Idea
A chief detective has been called in to solve the hardest murder to ever to be seen. He then calls in his brother, who is also a detective, to help him solve the murder. After several hours of long hard work they find out that the victim had an enemy who can not answer any of the question where he was when the murder took place, they then bring him into police custardy. Then whilst he was in his cell waiting to be sentenced the suspect gets killed. They then have a lead that both bullets that killed the victim and the suspect was fired from the same gun because of the markings on the bullet. Then the chief detective then finds out it was his brother that killed both of the people, and he then come to near death because he brother doesn't want anyone to no what happen. But the chief detective gets free and knocks his brother out  then later sentences him to life in prison for two murders and a near murder. As as the audience then find out that the two people that died worked in a weed business with the brother, and because they mucked up in what the customers wanted and lost a lot of money it resulted in death for both of them.

Second Idea
There is a women detective and she is known for her good work. Then one day when she finished late at the office someone tries to mug her, the person had a black mask on so she is unable to see there face. She fights them off but goes a bit to far and it results in the mugger getting killed. Then the next day she gets called into work for a crime scene in a house with a man that died with internal bleeding. As she investigates the crime scene she finds out that a hair that was found on the victims jacket was her hair, then she figures out that she was the murder and that victim was the man that tried to mug her. Then audience then see a flash back of what happen after she ran away, the man then gets up and goes back to his home and later on dies on internal bleeding in the brain and body. Once she knows that she is the killer she then starts to go mental trying to hide the fact that she killed the man, which results her going to a mental home then going into a mental asylum because she ends up confessing that she was the murderer.

We then decided that we would go with are first narrative idea because it has more potential with an opening to keep the audience on edge and wanting to no more.

Treatment Feedback

After are we presented our research for Thrillers, the genre we decided to do, we got some feedback from our class and teacher. The first bit of feedback we got was that we needed to research a bit more for the conventions of our genre, and choose a convention which we are going to change to challenge it. We also need to find a few more example of films with the genre of thriller and analyse them in more detail. There was also a suggestion that we should use voice overs in the opening sequence to set the scene and create the mood of the film. We then got told that thriller make the audience comfortable and then immediately make then uncomfortable again, constantly keeping them on the edge of their seats.

The thing that work well in our narrative is that the murderer is going to be someone least suspected and has been working in the police force all along. This will throw the audience off a little bit because it is not usually someone who you would consider a good guy to end up being the bad guy. Also having the main character and the murderer as brothers who work together as well creates a bit of atmosphere from where the main character has no clue that his brother will end up turning on him.

We could make our initial idea better by challenging some of the conventions to make it a bit different to normal thriller films. Also in stead of having our play set in busy streets it would be more mysterious to have it set in a dark ally, this was suggested to us by our teacher, and it would work well from where it will create more tension and atmosphere.

Next we thought that we will start thinking about what kind of shots and angle types we should use to create tension and atmosphere for out opening sequence. Then we will get together as a group and make our main narrative a bit more interesting. We should then figure out what we want to be shown in the opening sequence, so the audience will be left wanting to find out what happens next. Then we will create our story board getting the main shots and angle types down, so we have an insight of what the opening sequence will look like.

Peer Assessment

My idea i had was that all the characters are women in stead of men and bribe the police by flirting with them, therefore they got away with killing a guy and are more or less invincible from where everyone is on their side.

In my group they thought that the idea i had of all the characters being women instead of men work well, this is because in stead of the gangsters using money to bribe the police the women flirt with them to get their own way being cute and innocent. This is the way women in society as being the ones who don't do anything wrong and are venerable compared to men.

My group thought it would have been better if I come up with ideas of some camera shots and angles to create the opening sequence, and if I had more imagination with what could happen in the opening sequence I thought of.

How is gender represented in the Dalziel & Pascoe episode ‘a clubbable woman’?

 Gender is represented in mise-en-scene by using the setting and characters. In most of the scenes it denotes the setting in a ruby club, which has a pub inside. This connotes it the masculine side of the men, from where ruby is a contact sport and is known for men playing the game, for example the opening scene were the men in a scrum playing rugby. It also connotes that man are the ones who can handle alcohol drink, for example after the rugby match they went straight inside where the pub is and had a ‘pint’. Then later on in the episode when it was late at night there was a scene in the pub where it denoted at lot of men and only a few women. This connotes that the pub is mostly dominated by the men for example there was a crowd of men surrounding one women because she was a flirt from where she had loads of men to flirt with.

In sound with ambience and non-diegetic sound gender is also represented.  The ambience music denoted trumpets, which is a strong loud wind instrument, whilst the men where playing rugby. This connoted that the men were strong and growled loud when they play rugby and it gave the scene a more manly tone to it, which then lead on to an incident and a man got hurt. Then it denotes a non-diegetic sound of a heart beat once the man gets home, which connotes that he is not feeling to good and from the loudness of heart beat you can tell it is a sound put on top of the clip (non-diegetic).

Gender is then represented with camera by using different shot types and angles. With some of the shots it denotes a low angle when filming the men, this connotes power and that they are more important compared to women. Then it mostly denotes mid shot when filming women, which connotes that they are making sure they can get their breasts in the shot to show the body part that men pay the most attention to.

In editing with titles gender is in addition represented. The titles are denoted in capital letters with a white font colour, it is also underlined and has a line on top. This connotes the male dominance of the TV drama because of capital letters. Capital letter are usually used at the beginning of sentence or for the names of places and people, therefore when a whole word consistence of capital letter it makes it more noticeable and harsh which is like the harshness of the game rugby.

Prelim Editing

In the editing process we all took turns in editing, so i had a go at editing our footage. I also helped some of my group that was new to using apple mac computers, and gave views on what i thought look good or didn't work well.

We met the brief by making sure that we had a person that walked through the door and sat down at the beginning of the scene. Then we used shot reverse shot when the two characters where talking whilst using the 180 degree rule, for example when the characters are sitting on the chairs and are greeting each other then getting into a conversation. Then we used match-on-action when the characters where moving about for example when the the character Samuel walks through the door.

Most of the editing worked well from where the clips went well together, the only thing that didn't go to plan was that we had too much footage once editing all together so we had to cut most of the clips shorter. When we were filming we got all of the shots we planned but made them a bit more creative to make the clips more interesting. The planning also gave us a guide line on what we where supposed to be filming so it helped us get everything together.

Prelim Filming

We chose our location for filming because the sixth form common room related back to the age of the characters, which is around 16 - 18, and that they are still in education. Therefore it will suit the scene that the conversation will set place.

We used the 180 degree rule when filming the clips by making sure the camera stayed on one side of the actor, so it seemed like the characters stayed in the same place. We then used match-on-action when the first actor entered through the door and sat down,when the second actor stood up and finally when the first actor got punched in the face and fell on the floor.

As we went along we adapted our original shot types and angle to have a better effect on the scene. We also shared the sixth form common room with another group, so when important scenes were being shot the other group stayed quiet for us while we shot it and we done the same for them. The way our script was  read it stay's the same, we also had to use props such as a hat and jacket to make one of the characters look like a boy, from where one of our group members was away and we also used a phone as a prop.

Prelim Task

Our Prelim will entail someone walking through a door, sitting down, and then having a conversation which will end with one of the characters leaving.

We must demonstrate 180 degrees rule, making sure we don't go on the other side of the characters other wise it will look like the characters are on the same side. The other rule we have to demonstrate is the match-on-action shot, showing the action carrying on in a different shot so it makes sense.

Our initial idea is that there are two boys called Steven and Samuel, who are best friends. It is set in a school in the sixth form common area, Steven finds out that his friend Samuel is texting his girlfriend and Samuel tries to say it is harmless texting. Steven then gets angry and Samuel tries to get out of the situation by telling him he is going, which ends up with Samuel getting punched in the face by Steven and then Samuel walks off.

Characters: Samuel and Steven


Steven walks into the sixform common room and sits down next to samuel.


Samuel: Wag1 fam what you saying?


Steven: Yeah im cool fam you?


Samuel: Yeah im cool.


Samuel's phone goes off and he has a text from Stevens girlfriend (A picture comes up of her on the phone.)


Steven: Who's that?


Samuel: Arhhh its nothing its nothing!


Steven: (Stands up and grabs phone and see the picture of his girlfriend, and pauses.)

Steven: What do you mean it aint what i think? Thats my girl bruv!


Samuel: Nar mate, nar!


Steven reads the text, finds out it say 'meet me tonight at my yard'.


Steven: You been seeing my girl behind my back, bruv thats a vilation!


Samuel: (Stands up in front of him.) Fam look your my guy, i wouldn't snake it!


Steven: Do you think im some kind of mug? Do you think i cant read? It clearly says meet me tonight at my yard!


Samuel: Ite fam set me my phone init, because your being long. How can you think i will do that to you!(Goes to grab the phone off Steven.)


Steven: (snatches the phone back) Are you dumb bruv? You aint getting away with this!


Samuel: You no what your a waste man, i aint talking to you no more!


Steven: Im a what! (Steven throws a punch at samuel's face.)


Samuel: (Falls on the floor, then he gets up and goes up to Steven's face.) Im done with this shit! (takes his phone back and walks off.)
